Oil and gas and geothermal energy literacy activities were rolled out again on Thursday (18/07). At least 10 elementary schools in Wedi Subdistrict, Klaten Regency, Central Java enthusiastically participated in oil and gas and geothermal energy literacy activities. One of the lecturers of the Communication Science Department of UPN “Veteran” Yogyakarta Yudhy Widya Kusumo, M.A became a speaker as well as the implementer of the literacy activity.
The elementary schools that participated in this activity were SDN 1 Karang, SDN 2 Canan, SD Pandes, SDN 1 Pasung, SDN 1 Sukorejo, SDN Gadungan, SDS Muhammadiyah, SD Aisyiyah Full Day, SD Kanisius Murukan, and SDN 1 Kalitengah. Each school sent 6 students consisting of 3 boys and 3 girls and 3 accompanying teachers to carry out this activity. This activity is an Internal Community Service (PbM) activity, the Institute for Research and Community Service (LPPM) UPN “Veteran” Yogyakarta which is chaired by M.Th. Kristiati EA, ST, MT. Kris revealed that this literacy activity should be carried out in many schools so that teachers and students’ knowledge of oil and gas and geothermal energy can be well understood.
Starting with the opening and remarks from the Head of the Regional Technical Implementation Unit (UPTD) of Education in Wedi District Sudibyo, S.IP, MM. followed by remarks by the Head of the Community Service Team, M.Th. Kristiati EA, ST, MT. Before entering the literacy material delivery event, students and teachers were asked to fill out a questionnaire which was useful for research data in the community service journal. This questionnaire is very helpful for the members of PbM UPN “Veteran” Yogyakarta to provide research that is quite useful for the community.
After filling out the questionnaire, the children received materials on oil and gas and geothermal energy literacy. In this activity, the oil and gas literacy material was delivered by Dr Ir. Yosapat Sumantri, MT and the geothermal literacy material was delivered by Ir. Bambang Bintarto, MT. Elementary school students and teachers from Wedi sub-district enthusiastically followed it. This was reflected in questions from several teachers and students.
After the presentation of the material, the students were divided into eight groups, four groups drawing oil and gas energy and four groups of geothermal energy. The first group had a theme on the origin of oil and gas energy while the second was about how to get oil and gas energy. The third theme was about the benefits of oil and gas energy and the next theme was how to conserve oil and gas energy.
After the division of the drawing theme, students were asked to draw a picture with their imagination and give a description of the picture they made. The purpose of this session is so that students of SD Kecamatan Wedi can also retell their experiences in this literacy activity. In addition, they were also asked to write down their dreams. Not a few were inspired to become miners or oil and gas and geothermal miners.
According to Petroleum Study Programme lecturer and member of the literacy service, Indah Widyaningsih, ST, MT, this activity is useful to increase children’s knowledge about the energy contained in the earth. “This is a way of learning with a literacy approach that is quite interesting, besides children understanding, it also makes children creative in describing the contents of their thoughts,” she said.
