SLEMAN, MIKOM – The Communication Science Postgraduate Program at UPN “Veterans” Yogyakarta (Mikom UPNVY) held a workshop on writing articles for international journals on Saturday (7/11/2020). This online event was attended by 60 participants consisting of students and lecturers.
In her presentation, Prof. Rachmah Ida, a lecturer from the Communication Science Program at Airlangga University, explained the importance of publication, especially for lecturers. “Writing is essential, especially for lecturers, to fulfill the Tridharma of higher education and advance their careers,” said Rachmah.
According to Rachmah, writing a journal article is a relatively easy task. “We can start with simple things, such as local wisdom in facing disasters, health communication during the pandemic, and many more topics that can be explored,” expressed Rachmah.
She added that the most important aspect of writing is novelty compared to other authors with similar themes. “Writing can also be started by reading the conclusions of other authors, as there are usually suggestions for future research that can be developed,” said the professor specializing in media studies.
In activities moderated by Dr. Puji Lestari, Rachmah also shared her experience as a reviewer in the Journal of Communication Sciences (JIK) at UPNVY. “Sometimes as a reviewer, you have to wait for the mood so that you do not reject people’s writings,” Rachmah said.
For her, actually, the author only needs to follow the improvement instructions from the reviewer so that their writing is qualified to be published in a journal. Rachmah revealed that the abstract is the first thing a reviewer will look at in someone’s writing.
“Abstract should be engaging and intriguing to the reviewer to be easily accepted. It must be clear and describe the contents of the research, “said Rachmah.
The workshop was interactive for three hours. Participants attended from various cities, such as Jakarta, Cirebon, Yogyakarta, and the UPNVY Mikom students’ hometowns. In this activity, they actively sought information on how to find non-predatory indexed international journals and rekindled their motivation to write journals.
The Coordinator of the MIKOM UPNVY Program, Dr. Edwi Arief Sosiawan, also appreciated this activity and hoped that it would encourage the writing interest among students and lecturers, which is the essence of higher education. Similarly, the Head of the Department of Communication Science at UPNVY hopes that the collaboration with Rachmah as part of JIK UPNVY will continue.
