UPN VETERAN YOGYAKARTA HOLDS WORKSHOP AND DATA JOURNALISM COMPETITION THROUGHOUT THE YEAR

YOGYAKARTA – The Student Press Institute (LPM) Attitude UPN “Veteran” Yogyakarta held a data journalism training for three sessions, Saturday (30/10) and Sunday (31/10). The training was conducted by Tokopedia Data Analyst, Azaria Anggana Laras and Communication Science Lecturer, Khuswatun Khasanah. This activity was followed by an article writing competition that could be followed by teams from LPM throughout Yogyakarta.

Senja Yustitia as the Supervisor of LPM Sikap said that data journalism is not just displaying data, but how to interpret data and relate it to today’s situation. It takes high analytical power and that’s where the role of journalists is. Through data, it is expected to be able to provide a different perspective, which is richer, complete, new, and of course in favour of the public interest.

He added that data journalism was raised as a theme in a series of activities because it was motivated by the rampant inaccurate news amid the abundance of information. Therefore, the ability to write journalistic works needs to be improved. =

“Data journalism is important because it is in accordance with the value of accuracy in conveying the truth. This activity becomes easier considering the availability of many open sources, technology that is increasingly accessible. Even so, not many human resources in processing and narrating data and incomplete statistical publications are challenges in data journalism,” said Khuswatun Khasanah when providing training.

She added that today’s journalists must be able to process and analyse the abundant data to produce an interesting story. “We can use the data and present it in a way that is not boring even though what we show is just numbers,” Khuswatun Khasanah said.

Through this training and competition, the Head of the Communication Science Department, Agung Prabowo, expressed his hope. “Hopefully what is discussed in this event can run well and can provide increased competence in the world of journalism and writing activities.”

To be understood, in each session there are various materials and training provided. The first session material was data journalism, finding stories and research. The second session, understanding data & analysis using Google spreadsheet. Until the last session, namely data visualisation using Flourish, TimelineJS, and StorymapJS.
