The Rector of UPNVY, Dr Mohamad Irhas Effendi M.Si, revealed that the task of the public relations department in higher education is increasingly complex. They not only build the reputation of the institution but also handle crisis communication with both internal and external public.
“Public Relations also plays a role in establishing good relations with the community and between institutions. This has become a mandatory thing for public relations to do to create a conducive climate. This is why the role and function of PR is very important and irreplaceable,” he explained.
According to the Rector, public relations is the mouthpiece of information for an institution. This means that information issued by the institution comes from one door, namely Public Relations to maintain bias and ambiguity. Thus, every policy maker in the institution must provide the widest possible information to the PR on the policies issued which will then be informed to the public.
Therefore, Public Relations of UPN Veteran Yogyakarta is currently required to move quickly in providing information services, especially those related to the achievements and breakthroughs of government policies. This can be done by improving the performance of Public Relations at UPN “Veteran” Yogyakarta.
“One way is to start adopting technology, so that a strategic transformation can be made in reaching the public,” she explained.
The Rector added that UPN Veteran Yogyakarta Public Relations has conducted various coaching in an effort to improve the quality of campus public relations. This can be proven by the achievements made by the Public Relations of UPN Veteran Yogyakarta so far.
Among them are winning three awards at the Anugerah Humas Dikti (AHD) event held by the Ministry of Education and Culture (Kemendikbud) at the level of the Ministry of Education and Culture Satker State Universities.
