YOGYAKARTA – Department of Communication Studies of UPN “Veteran” Yogyakarta held a Roundtable Disscussion seminar entitled Media and Communication Studies Nowadays: New Technologies of Robotic and Artificial Intelligence Approach on Tuesday (13/6/2023) at the Public Relations Laboratory. The event presented Prof. Shin Mizukoshi from Japan and Prof. Seongsoo Baeg from South Korea, and was moderated by one of the Communication Science lecturers, Prayudi, PH.D.
The event began at 09.00 WIB which was attended by participants from lecturers and students. The first core material was delivered by Prof Baeg. As an opener, he questioned the participants about how they imagined a robot.
“This is not a question about science or technology. It is about the perspective of every human being,” he said.
He explained about the robots imagined in the past and how they are applied in today’s media. Prof Baeg also showed some videos and pictures about robots, such as Mighty Atom (Astro Boy, 1963), Edward Scissorhands (1990), Terminator 2 (1991), Metropolis (2001), and so on.
After Prof Baeg finished presenting his material, the event continued with an explanation from Prof Shin in the form of a workshop – a meeting between experts to discuss practical or implementation-related issues in their field of expertise – understanding the metaphorical development of a medium. He invited all participants to dare to try to develop an interest in drawing robots and artificial intelligence.
Prof Shin delivered a talk on the three-dimensional model of media miteration from Mizukoshi (2000). There are three important elements in this case, namely content, platform, and infrastructure. Content requires collaboration from each individual in the form of the results of reading information critically and active responses about it. The formation of media literacy partners and media literacy platforms are formed from these three things.
“The importance of media literacy in developing the ability and right to imagine alternatives,” he said.
Meanwhile, Meike Lusye Karolus as a seminar participant added, “This activity is very useful for lecturers in exchanging ideas about artificial intelligence. In addition, it is also good for developing networks here with those in Japan and Korea.”
