Yogyakarta – Department of Communication Science at UPN “Veteran” Yogyakarta organized an international seminar titled Intercultural Communication Skill for Managing Conflict: Philippines Perspective on Friday morning (26/5/2023) at the Public Relations Laboratory. The seminar materials were delivered by Prof. Isolde Valera, Ph.D from the Philippines.
The seminar, attended by approximately 50 participants consisting of faculty members and students, was held as part of the Visiting Professor program. In this event, Isolde presented materials on intercultural communication from various countries, especially in the Philippines.
The series of activities began with the singing of the national anthem, Indonesia Raya, and Mars Bela Negara by all participants. Subsequently, the event continued with a speech by the Chair of the Department of Communication Science, Agung Prabowo.
“This seminar is a manifestation of our desire to elevate the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences to an international level,” he said. According to him, this activity is also an effort to enhance the academic atmosphere on this campus.
The next segment of the event consisted of the delivery of materials and discussions moderated by Kurnia Arofah. Before presenting the core material, Isolde briefly shared her profile and background at De La Salle University, where she teaches.
She emphasized the importance of communication, especially with individuals from different cultures. “Understanding culture is crucial due to globalization,” said the first foreign professor invited by the Department of Communication Science.
According to Isolde, the management of intercultural conflict can be achieved through several efforts. Communicators and recipients need to understand each other. Cultural differences must be accepted wisely. In addition, communication symbols must be implemented appropriately.
Elsa Yuniastari, one of the seminar participants, gave her response. “This event is quite beneficial in broadening students’ perspectives, not only from the faculty’s viewpoint within the campus but also from other countries,” expressed the fourth-semester student.
Furthermore, she also conveyed her hopes. “Hopefully, events like this will be held more frequently with a larger audience and longer duration,” stated Elsa. (Irza Triamanda and Eka Indah)
