Yogyakarta(UPNVY) –
The Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) of Universitas Pembangunan Nasional “Veteran” Yogyakarta (UPNVY) opened a space for meeting FISIP UPNVY students with foreign students to engage in public lectures and discussions with the theme “Contemporary Issues in Human Security” held at the Public Relations Laboratory on the local campus, Thursday (12/12/2019).
This programme was jointly initiated with the Centre for Southeast Asian Social Studies (PSSAT) Universitas Gadjah Mada and ACICIS Study Indonesia in order to improve scientific insight and experience as part of the global community. For your information, PSSAT UGM is a centre of excellence for science and technology studies in the field of social sciences, specifically Southeast Asian studies.
In this programme, there are three international students involved, Amelia Harvey (RMIT University, Australia), Smriti Mishra (Jawaharlal Nehru University, India), and Maria Dana Joselito Buenaobra (National Chengchi University, Taiwan). They became part-time international students who participated in the learning process in the form of seminars. To support this programme, FISIP UPNVY appointed three lecturers from three departments in FISIP to become facilitators, including Hestutomo Kuncoro, M.A. (International Relations), Sauptika Kancana, M.Si. (Business Administration), and Prayudi, Ph.D (Communication Science/Public Relations).
This program brought together three foreign students to dialogue and share knowledge with FISIP UPNVY students from five study programs. Various topics discussed were contemporary issues in the field of human security, especially in Southeast Asia such as minorities and state recognition in the case of Muslims in Thailand, the Chinese Government’s humanitarian assistance in the Philippines, and women migrant workers in Singapore and Myanmar.
In this joint learning process, both FISIP UPNVY students and foreign students can exchange ideas with each other which is reflected in their questions and suggestions. This is considered positive as a first step to instil a healthy academic culture within FISIP UPNVY. In the future, this kind of joint learning model will be developed by inviting the cooperation of international universities and institutions. The goal is for FISIP UPNVY students to have resilience and collaboration skills in the midst of the current global era.
“This activity is our latest effort to expand our international network. To build a foundation for future interactions,” said the Vice Dean for Academic Affairs of FISIP UPNVY, Dr Hastho Joko Nur Utomo, in his speech. (Meike).
