Edwi Arief Sosiawan serves as an Associate Professor in the Department of Communication Studies at UPN “Veteran” Yogyakarta. A distinguished scholar of social media studies and communication psychology, he earned his Bachelor’s degree in Communication Studies from Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), Yogyakarta, in 1994. His academic journey continued with a Master’s degree from the Postgraduate Program at Universitas Padjadjaran (UNPAD), Bandung, in 2001, and culminated in a Doctorate in Cultural and Media Studies from the Postgraduate School of UGM in 2019.
Edwi's academic career began in 1994 as a lecturer at the Yogyakarta Communication Academy (AKINDO). A year later, he transitioned to a permanent faculty position in the Communication Studies Program at UPN “Veteran” Yogyakarta. Over the years, he has held numerous leadership roles, including Head of the Multimedia Laboratory, Secretary of the Department, Deputy Dean for Finance and Administration (Vice Dean II) of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP), and currently serves as the Coordinator for the Master’s Program in Communication Studies at UPNVY.
Beyond administrative responsibilities, Edwi has been a dedicated mentor to student organizations such as the Karate Club, Scout Unit, and, most recently, the UPNVY Marching Band. His passion for student development complements his prolific academic contributions, which include publications in esteemed journals, reference books, and research projects funded by both the Ministry of Education and local governments.
In addition to his academic works, Edwi is a recognized expert editor and peer reviewer for accredited scientific journals. He is also a member of the Academic Credit Evaluation Team for faculty members in various public and private universities. As a guest lecturer, he has shared his expertise across numerous higher education institutions, both public and private, in Yogyakarta.
Edwi’s contributions have earned him accolades, notably the Outstanding Lecturer Award from FISIP UPNVY in 2013. His academic prowess is complemented by a robust presence in professional and extracurricular activities. A holder of black belts in Karate, Aikido, and Yongmoodo, he is frequently invited as a keynote speaker at regional and national seminars and workshops. He has also facilitated training programs for prestigious organizations such as Pertamina, PT Adaro, the Indonesian Health Service, the Supreme Audit Agency (BPK), and the Agriculture Office of the Yogyakarta Special Region (DIY).
As an intellectual, Edwi regularly writes as a columnist for leading newspapers in Yogyakarta, offering insights into various socio-political and cultural issues. His commitment extends to social and professional engagement, including serving as Chair and General Secretary in numerous sports organizations and as a member of the Sleman Regional Sports Committee (KONI).
In addition to his academic and professional accomplishments, Edwi has also contributed creatively, collaborating as a consultant on a television advertisement for a political party directed by Garin Nugroho. He has also worked with the Yogyakarta Superhero Community J. Toku Film, underscoring his multifaceted talents and unwavering commitment to excellence in all his endeavors.
