KSM FOTKOM SHARES TIPS ON BUILDING PERSONAL BRANDING THROUGH SOCIAL MEDIA

YOGYAKARTA –

The Fotkom401 Student Study Group (KSM) of Universitas Pembangunan Nasional Veteran Yogyakarta organised the Creative Talk POTRET #2 event on Saturday (26/03/2022). The event was held online through the Zoom Meeting platform by presenting speaker Dian Rockmad who is a digital creator, photographer, and videographer for several brands.

As an opener, Syavilla Dyane as the moderator explained the meaning of the theme “How to Build Your Personal Branding on Social Media with Photography” raised in this event. “Social media has become a platform to build self-identity and character called personal branding, this certainly requires the right effort or strategy. Therefore, the creative talk was held with the aim of reviewing more deeply about how to do self-branding on social media, especially Instagram,” he explained.

In the first session, Dian Rockmad explained about personal branding. “Personal branding is a journey of self-discovery in order to be recognised by others. The challenge for today is short attention spans, so personal branding is important to stand out compared to other content creators,” she explained. Dian explained that before posting photos on Instagram, it is necessary to filter before sharing. Filter before sharing means that if we want to post something, we need to think about it well. This is because a negative post can affect the audience’s perception of one’s personal branding and credibility.

If you want to build your own personal branding on Instagram social media, Dian said that there are advantages and disadvantages. The advantages of photography personal branding on Instagram are that it can increase reach, make promotion more effective, and can facilitate engagement. The disadvantages include uncontrollable theft, unpredictable algorithms, and pressure on content creators. Regarding content theft, Dian shared another benefit of having personal branding. “The possibility of our content being stolen on Instagram is indeed very large, but if we already have our own personal branding then we will be able to reduce the risk of having our content stolen because our work has its own characteristics so that many people will recognise our work,” she said.

In the Q&A session, Dian answered questions about how it affects followers if someone often changes the genre of content posted on Instagram. Dian said that if someone often changes genres, then it can affect followers. “Surely many of our followers will unfollow us because the purpose of everyone following us on Instagram may be because they like the genre we post, and will become uninterested again if the genre changes. We are not a brand that can make everyone happy, finding the right genre for us is a journey to get our own personal branding,” Dian concluded.

In the next session, Dian discussed the phenomenon of photography trends that can build personal branding. According to Dian, to build personal branding, one can start from the genre that one likes and does not always have to follow trends. Dian explained that there are several steps to build personal branding. First, recognise yourself. Second, set goals/values according to your ability. Third, determine the appropriate target audience. Fourth, build relationships to get engagement.

One of the participants named Annisa conveyed her message and impression of this event. “The material presented by Dian in this Creative Talk is very useful and the event is very interesting for me who does not yet have personal branding. I now know what steps I need to take to build a strong personal branding so that I can develop my Instagram well,” she said.

For the record, Creative Talk POTRET #2 is a series of events to celebrate Fotkom401’s 21st Anniversary, which will culminate in a photography exhibition. More information about the peak of Fotkom401’s anniversary can be found on the Instagram page @fotkom401.
