Based on the Joint Decree of the Minister of Education and Culture and the Minister of Defence and Security of the Republic of Indonesia No.0370/0/1994 and Kep/10/IX/1994 dated 29 November 1994, the Department of Communication Science, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP), “Veteran” Yogyakarta National Development University (UPNVY) was established in 1994.
On August 26, 1995, the first academic activities were implemented together with the initial student recruiting. The Directorate General of Higher Education of the Ministry of Education and Culture issued the Department of Communication Science the status of organising undergraduate education with the title of Registered on April 13, 1996, under Directive Number 63/Dikti/Kep/1996. According to the Higher Education Decree BANPT Number: 020/BAN-PT/Ak-XI/S1/VIII/2008 dated August 29, 2008, the Department of Communication Science received recognition from the Agency National Accreditation of Higher Education (BANPT) for the first time in 2003 and received the status of the second degree for the ninth class.
The Department of Communication Studies initially concentrated on studying journalism. The Department of Communication Sciences broadened the focus of the subject of study, which is then referred to as a concentration, to include four categories: journalism, public relations, advertising, and broadcasting. This expansion followed the growth of scientific needs and industrial innovations.

By converting the public relations concentration at the Department of Communication Science into a distinct study programme called the Public Relations Study Programme Undergraduate Programme in 2017, the Department of Communication Studies once more broadened the area of institutional governance. In order to facilitate activities and identity recognition, the Public Relations Study Programme is then referred to by the acronym PRSP. According to the Republic of Indonesia’s Minister of Research, Technology, and Higher Education’s Decree Number: 387/KPT/I/2017, the Public Relations Study Programme was formally launched. With a total of 32 first-generation students, the Public Relations Study Programme conducted student recruitment for the first time in 2018.
The Department of Communication Studies FISIP UPN “Veteran” Yogyakarta developed into three study programmes, namely Bachelor (S1) Communication Science, Bachelor (S1) Public Relations, and Master (S2) Communication Science, as a result of the inauguration of a new study programme.
